a true rarity from salsouls vast archive here, one for the bonafide boogie heads out there. this has gotta be one of the rarest surface records in existence, 3 cuts of that amazing early 80s funk that only surface can do! a licensed late 90 s pressing of this particular ep became highly sought after and has since been impossible to track down for even the most dedicated diggers. 3 full length jams presented here, including a wondrous mix from the legendary shep pettibone of the classic falling in love, also included are the previously unreleased stop holding back and when your x wants you back. this whole record is pure heat, one for the aficionados. properly licensed, wonderfully remastered and reissued for the dancefloor! you re not gonna find a more solid, well rounded example of that killer post-disco, electronic funk than this collection of cuts. essential. snoozing not advised!

british producer zepherin saint has always been a man with a fierce passion for quality-strewn, vocal heavy deep house. a thoroughly captivating affair throughout, butterflies sees the producer return to his tribe records imprint alongside regular vocal collaborator, miranda nicole. kicking off the release is the ‘tribe vocal mix’- full of hazy, fuzzy sounds that play out beautifully. a refined house cut, it’s made all the more mesmerising by nicole’s sultry vocal contribution. a perfect foil to zepherin saint’s beats, the coming together of both is truly a joy to behold. bolstering the latter is a live mix, as well as an instrumental version, named here as the tribestrumental offering. zepherin saint is a truly exciting artist and one whose stock continues to rise thanks to his infectious-sounding, afro-tinged house sound.

loyoto are the east-berlin born eva be and cle from the western part of the formerly dived city. both started their dj and producer career almost at the same time in the heart of the then developing scene, the very center of berlin, just after the wall came down. originally rooted in very different styles of music, they encountered for the first time djing together in 2011, finding common ground in more than just music - a gig, that should lead to more: they decided to combine their talents and knowledge and build a studio together. here, and during legendary back2back dj sets, they finally united their different musical backgrounds - dub/reggae and underground house music - and defined their very own sound.

after previously releasing starship commander woooo woooos mastership lp, left ear records have continued excavating the archives of the artist more formally known as omer coleman jr. the result is two handpicked mid 80’s instrumentals salvaged from the original master tapes, as well as an extended vocal edit on the flip for good measure. after laying his alter ego to rest omer made a handful of electronic releases on his own kansas based remo label. of these releases left ear has selected their two favourite instrumentals: lovin babe sure is fun and so good. lovin babe sure is fun was originally released in 85 and was created to celebrate a time in america where the economy was good, people were happy and love was in the air, the essence of which omer captured using his roland 808 and 303 in what may best be described as acid-boogie. so good on the other hand is a sensual downtempo cut shaped with heavy-bass, telephone samples and guitar solos that conjures images of late night rendezvous and compromising scenarios.

there are west coast classics, and then there is music to driveby, the third lp from the group that birthed mc eiht: compton’s most wanted. although the group started in the late ‘80s with multiple mcs (including tha chill and boom bam), by 1992 eiht as pulling the group’s vocal weight – supported by dj mike t on turntables and production – and even producing and co-producing tracks. music to driveby might lack beats-per-minute variety, but to fans that’s not a bad thing. across the board, this is mid-tempo, super deep, funky hip-hop, made for cars creeping along boulevards across the west and south, and it’s about as good as it gets for such purposes. just about filler-free, the album struts intensely and with purpose, as eiht throws tales of cali street life at fans for an hour straight, almost without a break. this solo marathon is given a respite only once, with scarface’s guest spot on “n 2 deep,” an excellent hood roller supported by a soulful guitar lick sampled from lyn collins’ “do your thing.” elsewhere, eiht rolls alone and intensely, on cuts like the classic mash single “hood took me under”, the album’s second single and tim dog attack “who’s fu**ing who?”, the hometown big-up “compton 4 life”, and hustle tales like “jack mode” and “i gots to get over.” after this album, eiht released more classics under his own name, and with similar fan worship. it was the continuation of a legendary career and music to driveby still ranks high on anyone’s “west coast legends” playlist.

new year, new release for burnin music. after 2 strong eps in 2017 (ponty mython bm001 and leonidas +kay suzuki bm002) burnin music first release of 2018 features the first ep of an up-and-coming british artist called michael iwatsu also featuring a remix by german producer, soulphiction. fracture (original mix) is a 10 mins long journey. a beautiful odyssey between beats and harmony, between intuitive dance floor and subtle emotions. the main piano brings a perfect balance to the stomping house kick & drum. and as the journey continues, the trip develops leading to more sonic ventures. exciting, touching, pure, fracture (original mix) is a very balanced track. on the flip side, house music master soulphiction accomplishes the task to bring the track into a dark basement. his remix is a condensed version of everything that makes the original track an emotional one and also add a detroit twist: it becomes a raw, moody and very intuitive sonic object. a tool for the dancefloor.

the saver flex ep offers up no less than four seriously catchy house jams. blue shoe kicks off the proceedings with some funked up percussion, which immediately shows that kolja s background as a drummer has taught him a thing or two about groove. a looping organ lick, some little shouts in the background, big stabs and a massive kick drum push the track forward. cleverly arranged breakdowns allow for a couple of breathers to keep the party action going throughout. moving on to lax wax , we ease up a little with a lighter beat on top of which filtered piano chords, a live bass and just a touch of guitar set the perfect mood for an organ solo that simply oozes summer vibes. buggel runter rutschen keeps the mood nice and sunny while adding more punch with snappy kicks and snares – a hugely danceable foundation for these guys to show us what is so great about 70s and 80s disco and funk that these styles are amongst their biggest influences. you had better ask a german what kagghaufen means, we don t want to put you off your dinner. we hope it will be just as tasty as this track is with its pounding, straight beat, which is counterpointed by bouncy congas, funky vocal cuts, beautiful pads and healthy dose of squelchy acid for good measure. all of this is effortlessly combined to round off the ep in style.

heady, astute, deep techno and ambient from blue veil, a new musical project from danny clancy. blue veils debut ep reveals gorgeously textured techno on tracks like wherethetimegoes and citizen score, as well as crafting some tender ambient passages on cuts like night czar and a kind of adventure. the ep will be released on dichotomy records, a new imprint, dedicated to refined electronic music. the labels ambition is to allow artists to explore dichotomies through their work, as they span sonic landscapes from pure ambient to techno, and other abstract dance sounds in-between. there will be a strong attention to the visual presentation of the label, with all artwork and photography also created by label boss danny clancy. with the next release lined up from ahu, and more to follow from there, the agenda for dichotomy records looks hugely promising indeed.

next up on creme organizaiton is lake haze. the hague based portuguese artist is a regular on this label having put out four eps in the last two years. hes also linked with unknown to the unknown and shall not fade so is an esteemed talent with a blistering sound that fuses futuristic techno and electro into storytelling dancefloor dynamite. space reservoirs kicks off this ep with slow but heavy drum work, acid twitches and spooky cosmic echoes. the observer picks up the pace with quick and slick kicks from the streets of detroit overlaid with ripping electro basslines and deep space atmospherics. unexplored oceanic territory is expansive electro with busted drums and echoing pads that add real scale before more acid finishes things off with real rawness. prototype is dark and heavy, with another searing baseline and crisp metallic hits, then into the unknown is a blissed out electro roller with dreamy pads and twinkling keys melt ing into the cosmos. it closes out another essential ep from this timeless producer.

tresor is glad to announce the release of manni dee’s first album the residue , on june 15th. based in london, manni dee is held in high esteem by many for his spotless production and relentless dj sets. the gleaming rendition of manni s creative vision stuns. he knows sounds inside-out, making his studio a favorite stop for many to receive manni’s expertise. the production of the residue’ was inspired by the city of london and its general living conditions. more particularly, how social cleansing, inequality and the political situation generally - and on a holistic scale - informs internal and external locus of control. the residue’ is disconsolate, and with such heart-wrenching tracks as “in communal solitude”, “vicarious living” or “submit. breathe.” or the mutinous “at mercy of the muse” and “paroxysm” manni dee clearly cuts out his insurgent statement. in parallel to his regular dj schedule, manni dee will also take his sonic proclamation in its live pa form out to the most advanced stages starting this summer.

dutch label field records is back with another special album project, this time from japanese producer ena aka yu asaeda. bridge is an introspective soundtrack for a documentary also called bridge - out this spring - which is about the dejima bridge, a reconstructed symbol of the dutch-japanese trading history in nagasaki, japan. the album finds the producer stepping outside of his usual remit of dark ambient and experimental music, and instead comprises ten shorter tracks that touch on abstract and rhythmic sounds that define the essence of japanese culture. although he has worked with the director before, this is ena s first original sound track and finds him freely inspired by the movie and heading in exciting and unknown directions. hugely atmospheric throughout, there is hypnotic repetition of sounds, strange audio design and a mixture of melancholic moods with more dreamy synths. sometimes gloopy rhythms gently ripple beneath soothing harmonies and at others times a micro-rhythm appears through the constantly shifting and evolving found sound loops. it s a compelling and unusual album that seamlessly mixes human emotions with a mechanical sense of industry.

conforce is back on his home label with four more of his richly detailed and hugely atmospheric techno tracks. its his first release on delsin since latest album autonomous back in 2017 and finds him in typical underwater techno territory. celestion kicks things off with smeared pads and rubbery, dubby drums instantly setting a hypnotic groove. the serene ambience makes it feel like youre deep down in the ocean and various deft sonic details drift by the keep things on the move. vessel is another fathom deep track with supple drums undulating on the sea bed as beams of synth light things up from above. theres melancholy in the pads that brings a rueful vibe, while zephyr is more troubled and turbulent thanks to the wet, gurgling synths and darker bass sounds. aerial rounds things out with heavyweight, rumbling kicks and ominous energy that keeps you on edge, despite the presence of beautifully celestial keys. as ever , it all makes for an absorbing trip.

next up on donato dozzy and neels spazio disponibile label is close friend and italian producer marco shuttle. the eerie label-boss is a regular on the label having put out his systema album here last year, as well as his flauto synthetico ep in 2016. his always meticulously crafted sound is rooted in dark, cavernous techno. he finds plenty of new ground in each new release, though, with some tracks being haunting ambient works and others more propulsive rhythms. this new ep features just that across four typically inventive and absorbing tracks that are as much for your head as they are for your heel.

paul dickow aka strategy is a musical polymath with a signature sound derived from his immersion in hardware-based electronic music. he has spent close to two decades traveling freely through house, techno, rave, noise, ambient, and sounds more difficult to categorize. strategy’s sound is inimitable because it is literally built by hand - his hands. through all of this sonic journeying, including multiple full length releases, a constant has been his love of reggae and dub, yet somehow a proper dub album has never emerged - until now.

yoruba records welcomes back label favourite mike steva with a well-balanced and forward thinking ep that both engages and pushes boundaries. opening up with ‘love symphonik’, this stutter-stepped jam practically drips with mpc flavour. up next, ‘the message’, a bold proclamation with more straight forward percussion. with added balkan flavour this one is as deep as they come. this is followed with ‘sila’ where steva’s chops are on full display. this engaging and well-constructed groove conjures of feelings of celebration, one that’s easy to imagine taking place in the streets of macedonia. we close with ‘zensko oro’, a deep and moody percussive-led jam. this one speaks of movement, slowly building on itself and reaching a natural climax that enhances and delights the senses of the astute listener. sit back, relax and enjoy this soon-to-be essential piece of the yoruba records canon.

soul clap definitely knew what they were doing when they snapped up certifiable diva legend nona hendryx to sing on one of the cuts from their self-titled 2016 album. now ray mang has got his mitts on the parts to -shine (this is it)- and turned out three versions for his own mangled label - the classic combination of extended vocal, instrumental and radio edit versions. whichever cut suits you best, the vibe is the same, a bold and bright summer party track splashed with horns, keys and plenty more besides, although the smart money is on hendryx s legendary vocal, which soars as though no time has passed since her days working with material in 80s nyc.

ste roberts steps up with the second instalment on his self-titled label, once again burrowing into the more mysterious corners of the house and techno spectrum to deliver distinctive dancefloor gold for those who like their beats a little different. circle is a nocturnal affair that matches dark techno atmospherics with a rigorous housey bump, and the results are stellar. ac is equally tough, although in this instance the main ingredient is a rattling conga sample that has a raw, live and in the room quality that contrasts the unrelenting kick drum perfectly.

the essential will & ink label continues to keep up the pressure with a new ep from museum aka anton pieete and jeroen liebregts. the pair have released on vital labels like marcel dettmann records and indigo area and make some of the most robust and powerful techno around. their three new tracks here come with a remix from resident label artist yalessa hall. opener silo is an urgent groove with warped and rumbling synth lines and frazzled textures. it s sparse and industrial as it barrels along while the list is much more wild. the drums flail around, the hits are off grid and the energy is restless and rugged. lastly from them, 1500 has punchy drum programming and watery sound effects, sci-fi motifs and a sense of turbulence that will make a real impact in the club. the raw yalessa hall remix flips the list into a freaky house track with smeared synths and big hits making for something incendiary and unhinged.
